Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale Showing In US

Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale opened in Japan on Saturday with a one-night subtitled screening set for March 9 through Fathom Events and Aniplex with over 500 movie theater locations in the US participating in the showing. You can check out the English-subtitled trailer from Aniplex below.

Synopsis: The movie is about a new hit game Ordinal Scale which utilizes the augmented reality device Augma instead of virtual reality’s full dive technology. In the game players are ranked based on their achievments with higher ranked players having advantages in battles against lower ranked peers. As the realities between the virtual world and real world begin to blur and monsters from Ainclad begin to appear Kirito is forced once again to try and save his friends.

The technology in Sword Art Online is meant to be a similar (or even a precursor) to the technology in Accel World where AR and VR are completely integrated into an implant that children get. Both are created by Kawahara Reki, an award winning light novelist in Japan.

The film ranked #1 in its opening weekend playing in 150 theaters making ¥425 million. Preliminary reviews from Japan seem to be mostly positive, especially from fans who already enjoyed the first two seasons of the show. Many have complimented the animation as being of high quality and the story interesting.
